From the first day Lamborghini announced its new and improved Gallardo LP560-4, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure it was only a question of time until the Gallardo Spyder received the same treatment.

That time has come. Now entering into the (Raging Bull) ring is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder, which is making its world debut at the 2008 Los Angeles auto show.

Like the coupe, the LP560-4 Spyder loses 44 lb and gets 200 cc added to its V-10 engine -- a new, 5.2L aluminum unit with 552 hp, 398 lb-ft on tap. Mated to the updated engine is Lambo's reprogrammed e.gear six-speed transmission that Lamborghini claims shifts 40% faster in the sportiest "corsa" mode. The improvements led to a claimed 0-to-62-mph time of 4.0 sec and a top speed of 201 mph for the LP560-4 Spyder according to the automaker. At the same time, Lamborghini points out that both fuel economy and CO2 emissions are substantially improved. The outgoing Gallardo Spyder achieved 10/15 mpg with the stick and 10/16 mpg with the e.gear, but the LP560-4 gets 12/20 with the stick and 13/20 with the e.gear. Impressive numbers for a supercar.

The LP560-4 Spyder's brakes have been upgraded as well. The standard brake system consists of 14.4-in. vented discs with eight-piston Brembo calipers up front and 14.0-in. vented discs with four-piston calipers at the rear. If that's not enough, Lamborghini offers a carbon-ceramic brake package consisting of monster 15.0-in. discs up front and 14.0-in. discs at rear.

One thing that hasn't changed is the Spyder's roof design. The Gallardo remains a softtop convertible. Its canvas top, available in four colors -- black, blue, gray, and beige -- opens or closes in just 20 sec, a remarkable contrast to the infamous afterthought top on the Murcielago Spyder. With the top down, the rear glass can be left up to serve as a wind deflector, or it can be folded independently with the top up. Rollover protection is provided via a pair of spring-loaded bars behind the seats that deploy within 250 msec if necessary. According to Lamborghini, the extra flexibility associated with the lack of a fixed roof is compensated for with structural elements within the frame designed to increase rigidity.

Standard features include dual side curtain airbags, dual-zone climate control, leather seats, HID headlights with LED driving lights, and a stereo with a USB input. Optional features include Bluetooth, a navigation system and a rearview camera. Also available are Alcantara-upholstered seats and various carbon trim options. Still no scissor doors though.

Lamborghini couldn't have picked a more suitable of a place to launch its new drop-top model than Southern California, specifically at the 2008 Los Angeles International Auto Show. With supercar-friendly weather virtually year 'round, it's little surprise that the area is a huge market for the Raging Bull. Earlier this year, the company announced it would be setting up its North American headquarters in Santa Monica and until recently, Southern California was home to the world's number-one Lamborghini dealer, the now-closed Lamborghini of Orange County, which accounted for about 10% of Lambo's global sales annually. Dealer drama aside, the 2009 Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder should start at around $220,000 when it goes on sale sometime next year.

Lamborghini Murcielago Gets 200mph+ Targa-Style Roadster With AWD
Lamborghini of late has been milking every dollar it can from the aging Murcielago with one special edition after another, counting on the supersports coupe and roadster to continue to sell to its clientele until the eventual introduction of an all-new top bull.

The latest in the line, in a limited run of 50 units that are sure to sell immediately, is the quickest and most dramatic modern-day factory Lambo to date, the 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago LP 650-4 Roadster.

The new 650-4 features the most powerful engine in a drop top Lamborghini to date, a version of the company's ubiquitous V12 massaged out to 6.5 liters and 650 horsepower. As the "-4" extension indicates, the Murcielago LP560-4 Roadster carries permanent all wheel drive which should help to keep it on the road in the hands of drivers whose wallets outweigh their skill.

AWD helps the heavier roadster version of the Murcielago make it to 100 km/h from a standstill in 3.4 seconds, all the way up to a top speed of 205 mph. For comparison purposes, the 2WD standard-trim Murcielago Roadster takes 3.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h.

All 2010 Murcielago LP 650-4 cars get identical exterior paint and trim, with flat gray main body color with orange and carbon accents. The V12 is housed amidships under a transparent cover so pedestrians and truck drivers can know what the driver is packing.

Contact Lamborghini for availability, but don't cross your fingers if you don't have serious clout in the car world. Once the limited run of 50 are gone, you'll just have to wait for the next special edition a couple months down the line.

Lamborghini Murcielago Gets New SuperVeloce Halo Supercar Model
Not so long ago, Lamborghini cars like the Mucielago, and their Ferrari counterparts, were just about the fastest things money could by. In the last couple of years, the rise of the boutique supercar has had an effect on the Italians. Lamborghini hits back with the 2010 Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, the fastest and most pure sports car ever to roll out of the Italian car icon's factory.

Smoking lesser Lamborghini Murcielago cars in nearly every respect, the SuperVeloce benefits from a lightened and totally reworked Lamborghini V12 engine, now producing 670 horsepower at the crank and helping the SuperVeloce weigh in at 220 pounds less than the standard Murcielago cars.

More power and weight savings are nice for straight line speed and on spec sheets, but where Lamborghini has perhaps fallen behind nontraditional record holders like Nissan and Chevrolet has been in the handling department. The SuperVeloce seeks to change all that, combining front and rear variable limited slip differentials with an AWD system that is all about the track.

Sitting on a double wishbone suspension at all four corners with an innovative system utilizing a dual strut setup in the rear, the Murcielago SuperVeloce and its AWD system react to the road.

The weight distribution favors the rear ever so slightly, but with dual differentials able to send up to 35 percent of the power up front at a moment's notice, expect the SuperVeloce to be a very forgiving supercar without losing driving prowess.

In addition to the lighter Lamborghini V12 powerplant, the Murcielago SuperVeloce gets extensive weight savings in the body with nearly 75 pounds shed in chassis and body panels. Particularly striking is the engine cover.

Functional as it is beautiful, the carbon and plexiglass honeycomb cover for the mid-mounted V12 is open in each section at its rear end, allowing greater cooling potential for an engine that will undoubtedly see some significant time at limit.

You don't start this 640-horsepower V-12. You ignite it. The result is an eruption of mechanical and exhaust noises that'll peg your car lust-o-meter like it may not have been pegged in a while. And now, your ears will enjoy the aural assault that much more, as the LP640 (the updated, upgraded, and uprated version of the flagship Murcilago) is at last available in roadster form. Pity the poor Kenwood audio system. It won't get much use, because the tunes you'll want to hear come from just over your right shoulder.

The LP640 Roadster combines the LP640 coupe's technical and design updates with the al fresco style of the previous Murcilago Roadster. The angular body basics are the same, but the front and rear ends get a nip/tuck; that front spoiler could be dangerous to one's shins. The rockers also are bladelike, and the side scoops are asymmetrical. The driver-side intake houses an oil cooler, while the opposite one is shaped differently and is vestigial. Wheel and taillight designs are new, as are the slats over the engine and a host of other details. Lambo's design studio has freshened up the cabin, interior materials, and electronics.

Although architecturally the same as the previous Murcilago's V-12, this engine's displacement gets punched from 6.2 to 6.5 liters. Horsepower is now 631 and torque increases to 487 pound-feet. Take your choice between a conventional six-speed manual and Lamborghini's eGear autoclutch transmission. All-wheel drive remains standard.

Given the engine's size and cylinder count, it's no surprise there's torque all over the tach. It really wakes up at about 4500 rpm with a reedy intake howl and a Howitzer-style blast out of a single exhaust pipe that would make most "Fast and Furious" types jealous beyond words. Gunning this barrel-chested V-12 to 8000 rpm and pulling the upshift paddle at full throttle is an automotive joy to be relished. The eGear trans is better mannered than most, shifting gently with no bucking at part throttle; banging out hard, race-car-style shifts in sport mode and orchestrating symphonic, rev-matched downshifts. This mechanical soundtrack will have you finding excuses to drive the LP640 through long tunnels.
